Shielded or unshielded bearing

Hey Guys

For field work, do any of you run your bearings unshielded?

Got myself some vxb ceramic bearings for the ABUs (4x10x4 bearings). Straight out of packaging, bearings doesn't seem to run smooth, do not spin (spinning using fingers) anymore than 3 sec of free spinning.

Submersed in lighter fluid for ~10min and it does seems to loosen up a little and spin more freely, but still not quite right.

Took the bearing shields out and found some gunked on the inside of shield and again submerse in lighter fluid. Bearings is now spinning good with no shield. Tempted to leave the shield out and install as is back into the spool (with a drop of rocket fuel).

Given that it is a field only reel, running the bearing without its shield should be OK, right?

Ronnie ,

No shields are fine and as you found it is much easier to clean them and one less point of friction to occur is something does get between them and the race.

Regards :D

Field reels are fine with no shields, but for fishing reels I like to leave the outer shield on for protection, while leaving the inner one off for ease of cleaning and lubing.

Hope this helps!
