What is optimum rod length ?

Postby Jeremy Schrader » Tue May 29, 2018 7:30 pm

Had a relaxed session with shaik down at Studd road the other day and it got me thinking of what is the ideal rod length and how can we get the most from them ? I have been using my full length Century T1000 for the past number of months but also was leaning towards my shorter TT Sport.

At the recent WA state and national titles I got my best distances on the Sport finding that easier to get moving at speed for me being only 5'6" tall. so this posses a simple question what rod lengths have people found produce the best for them and what height are you ?

Here is the link to the casting with the TTR ?

Its an interesting question. When I was casting weekly and at my best I found 13ft about right but that was somewhat dependant on butt stiffness. I'll always remember the first time Neil M. (God rest him) used the original bullet at a UKSF event, his technique suffered, rod was just too stiff, and he was a big guy. I think the slow mo's are pretty telling, when a rod is too stiff and/or too long they always make the caster look like he's lost control at the end of the cast, has that kind of 'hanging on for dear life' look about it! You look at your best when slightly more reliant on a fast exit rather than trying to hold massive compression. Just an opinion of course, I could be wrong, often am!! I'm 5ft 11in and 75kgs by the way.
